Where are you going? this is message 410 and day 64 in the 8-C Challenge and this message is dedicated to the memory of Earl Nightingale.
Have you ever heard the phrase “port of call”? It is the destination of a ship. Earl Nightingale loved the illustration of ships because he saw them operating the way people ought to. A ship has direction and purpose. He never used this term but he understood ships and people are both teleological. This is just a fancy philosophical term for far-seeing or observe from afar. We get the word telescope. People think about the future. Like a ship that can’t see its destination for 99% of its journey, so people can’t see the destination, but have a desire to aim toward something.
We have talked about the 3 U’s (universal, ultimate, and unique). We all have a universal desire to fulfill our potential, to be our best. We all have an ultimate desire to close the gap day-to-day between who we actually are and who we are capable of being. But we all have a unique call. Some want to be a mom, some a teacher, others a business owner, and others an athlete. All these unique roles come with unique goals. All these unique goals create unique processes and priorities. Many have multiple roles and goals. This diversity makes life interesting.
What is your “port of call”? What is the unique destination you’re heading? Where are you going and what path is taking you there. It’s your journey. We are influenced by other ships on the sea but when it comes down to it only you can chart your unique course.
