Dream Dinner

If you could plan a dinner conversation with any group of people, deceased or still living, who would you pick?

I have been watching several shows lately that made me think about a scenario like this.

I think The Crown is a masterpiece. I fell in love with Claire Foy and Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Queen and Prince Philip that I hesitated jumping into Season 3, knowing about the cast change. I should not have hesitated. Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies were so good.

This show has heightened my respect for Elizabeth II. I am fascinated by who she is and what she has stood for. A conversation with her would be captivating. So she would be on the dinner guestlist for sure.

I have not seen the movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, but I have been a fan of Fred Rogers for a long time. A podcast series titled “Finding Fred” was produced recently by Carvell Wallace. I highly recommend it. Mr. Rogers would be invited.

If you have an Amazon Prime account, you should take advantage of a Zig Ziglar documentary that you can watch for free on Prime Video called Zig: See You at the Top.

If you are familiar with Zig, it will remind you why you loved this man so much. If you have never heard of Zig, it will make you want to check him out.

So many great stories about Zig and his message from Seth Godin, Dave Ramsey, Lou Holtz, and Rudy Ruettiger (as well as family and co-workers). I am thankful I was able to hear him speak in person towards the end of his life, but I would relish the chance to sit down for a meal with him.

My last two guests are religious figures: Eugene Peterson and Billy Graham.

Peterson is well-known for a paraphrase of the Bible he wrote called The Message. I have been shaped spiritual by his writing probably more than anyone else. There is a series of videos between him and Bono from the band U2 which is worth watching.

Billy Graham spoke to more people than any human being, I believe. (You can fact check me on that but I believe that is true.) For as much notoriety and fame as he achieved, his humility is a trait everyone admires who knew and met him. I would love an opportunity to glean wisdom from him.

  • Queen Elizabeth II
  • Mr. Rogers
  • Zig Ziglar
  • Eugene Peterson
  • Billy Graham

This would be my dream dinner. It would be an interesting interaction among this group. I could imagine each seeking to defer to the other in such a way that it would become a game to see who could give more attention to the other.
